Buying NFL playoff tickets is different from buying for the regular season.

The biggest difference is not simply higher demand. It is uncertainty.

Until the regular season is complete, you may not know which teams will qualify, who will host, which round your team will enter or exactly when the game will be played.

That creates a different ticket market — and a different buying strategy.

For the 2026 season, the NFL postseason begins with Wild Card Weekend from 16–18 January 2027, followed by the Divisional Playoffs on 23–24 January and the AFC and NFC Championship Games on 31 January.

If you are following a particular team, our advice is simple:

understand what is confirmed before you buy, and understand what happens to your money if the game you are buying never takes place.

2026 NFL Playoff Schedule

The 2026 NFL postseason takes place in January and February 2027.

RoundDates
Wild Card Weekend16–18 January 2027
Divisional Playoffs23–24 January 2027
AFC Championship Game31 January 2027
NFC Championship Game31 January 2027
Super Bowl LXI14 February 2027

Fourteen teams qualify for the postseason — seven from the AFC and seven from the NFC.

The No.1 seed in each conference receives a first-round bye, while the remaining six teams in each conference play during Wild Card Weekend.

That structure matters when buying tickets because the venue for later rounds depends on seeding and the results of earlier games.

What Makes NFL Playoff Tickets Different?

During the regular season, you usually know the teams, stadium and date months in advance.

During the playoffs, some of those details can remain uncertain until only days before the game.

Three things therefore matter more:

qualification — will your team actually make the playoffs?

seeding — will they host or travel?

progression — will they still be alive when the next round takes place?

That means a listing for a potential future playoff game is not the same proposition as buying a ticket for a confirmed regular-season fixture.

Always establish exactly what you are buying.

Should You Buy Before the Matchup Is Confirmed?

Sometimes — but only if you understand the conditions attached to the ticket.

Teams can make playoff inventory available before every detail of a game is known.

That may give supporters an opportunity to secure a seat before the wider market reacts to a confirmed matchup.

But it also creates uncertainty.

Buying early can make sense if:

you strongly expect your team to host;

you want access to a specific seating area;

inventory is already limited;

or the purchase terms clearly explain what happens if the game is not played.

Waiting can make sense if:

your team’s seed is uncertain;

you need to know the opponent before committing;

you are travelling a long distance;

or you are not comfortable tying up money in a potential game.

Our view

For a local supporter, buying conditionally can be a reasonable calculated risk.

For somebody travelling from the UK, we would be much more cautious about committing to flights and hotels until the venue and schedule are actually confirmed.

A refundable playoff ticket does not make a non-refundable flight refundable.

How Do NFL Playoff Tickets Go on Sale?

There is no single release moment covering every playoff team.

Ticket arrangements are handled by the participating clubs and their authorised ticketing partners.

Season-ticket holders may receive priority or access to postseason packages, while additional inventory can then become available to other buyers.

Verified resale inventory can also appear as soon as existing ticket holders decide to sell.

The important point is that playoff supply develops in stages.

A game that looks extremely scarce before the matchup is confirmed can see additional tickets appear later.

Equally, a desirable matchup can cause prices to move sharply once supporters know exactly who is playing and where.

Our preference is therefore to monitor:

  1. the official team ticket route;
  2. verified resale inventory;
  3. the actual number of seats available;
  4. the matchup and seeding situation.

Headline price alone does not tell you whether the market is tightening or loosening.

NFL Wild Card Tickets

Wild Card Weekend contains six games.

Because the No.1 seed in each conference receives a bye, seeds two through seven make up the opening round.

For ticket buyers, the Wild Card round has one major advantage:

there are more games than at any later point in the postseason.

That usually creates a wider range of ticket markets.

One Wild Card game may involve an extremely desirable home team and command a significant premium, while another can remain relatively accessible.

Our approach to Wild Card tickets

If your priority is simply experiencing an NFL playoff game rather than following one specific franchise, Wild Card Weekend is probably the round we would investigate first.

You have six different markets to compare instead of two or four.

That gives you more flexibility around ticket cost, flights, hotels and destination.

For UK supporters wanting the playoff experience without paying Championship Game prices, this can be the sweet spot.

NFL Divisional Round Tickets

The Divisional Round is where the ticket market starts to tighten.

Only four games remain, and the No.1 seeds enter the postseason at this stage.

Those top seeds have already earned home-field advantage for their first game, which means supporters may have had longer to anticipate a potential Divisional fixture.

The other venues depend on Wild Card results.

Why this round can be attractive

For many fans, the Divisional Round offers an excellent balance.

The stakes are higher than Wild Card Weekend, every remaining team is two wins from the Super Bowl, and the atmosphere can rival a Conference Championship.

But there are still four games rather than two.

If Championship Game prices are beyond your budget, the Divisional Round deserves serious consideration.

AFC Championship Tickets

The AFC Championship is one of only two games played on Conference Championship Sunday.

At this point, scarcity becomes a major factor.

There is one AFC game, one host city and one place in the Super Bowl at stake.

The venue is determined by playoff seeding and results, so supporters may not know where the game will take place until the Divisional Round concludes.

That creates a concentrated burst of demand once the matchup becomes certain.

Our dedicated AFC Championship Tickets guide will cover that market in detail.

NFC Championship Tickets

The NFC Championship follows the same principle.

Only one NFC game remains, with the winner advancing to the Super Bowl.

Unlike the Super Bowl, however, the Conference Championship is played at one of the participating team’s home stadiums.

That distinction matters.

A team with an intense local fanbase and limited resale inventory can create a dramatically different ticket market from another possible host.

Our dedicated NFC Championship Tickets guide will provide matchup-specific buying guidance once the postseason picture develops.

NFL Playoff Ticket Prices

There is no meaningful universal price for an NFL playoff ticket.

Wild Card prices in one market can be lower than premium regular-season games elsewhere, while Championship Game tickets can become some of the most expensive team-hosted tickets of the year.

The biggest price drivers are:

  • host team;
  • opponent;
  • round;
  • stadium capacity;
  • local demand;
  • seat location;
  • how much resale inventory reaches the market;
  • and how quickly the matchup becomes certain.

The key mistake to avoid

Do not assume the price must rise simply because kickoff is getting closer.

Sometimes it does.

Sometimes additional sellers enter the market once their plans change.

Sometimes a matchup generates less travelling demand than expected.

The useful signal is inventory as well as price.

If prices are high but hundreds of comparable tickets remain available, waiting may still be reasonable.

If both inventory and seat choice are disappearing, waiting carries much more risk.

When Should You Buy NFL Playoff Tickets?

There is no universal cheapest day.

Instead, we would base the decision on how much uncertainty you can tolerate.

Buy earlier when:

you need several seats together;

the host team has a particularly strong ticket market;

you want a specific section;

you are attending regardless of opponent;

or certainty matters more than finding the absolute lowest price.

Consider waiting when:

you are flexible on seating;

there is substantial resale inventory;

you are already in the city;

or you are choosing between several possible playoff games.

Our rule

The more expensive the rest of your trip, the less sense it makes to gamble with the ticket.

If the ticket is the only thing you are buying, waiting can be rational.

If the ticket sits inside a $1,500 international trip, protecting the trip becomes more important than trying to save the final $30–$50.

NFL Playoff Tickets for UK Fans

The biggest mistake a UK supporter can make is treating an NFL playoff trip like a normal regular-season weekend.

During the regular season, the schedule is largely known months ahead.

During the postseason, the city you need to travel to may depend on a game played only one week earlier.

We would separate the trip into two decisions

Decision one: the ticket

You may decide that securing conditional or early inventory is worthwhile if the terms are clear.

Decision two: travel

Be much more cautious.

Unless the venue is certain, flexible or refundable travel arrangements have significantly more value than they do for a normal NFL weekend.

For the Conference Championships in particular, travelling supporters can have only a week between knowing the matchup and attending the game.

That is part of the real cost of postseason football.

Following Your Team Through the Playoffs

If your priority is a specific team rather than a specific round, think in scenarios.

Before the postseason begins, establish:

  • whether the team is likely to host;
  • what seed they could finish with;
  • whether they could receive a first-round bye;
  • which stadiums they may need to visit;
  • and which travel scenarios you could realistically make work.

Do not book a trip based solely on the assumption that your team will host.

Playoff seeding can turn a potential home game into an away game very quickly.

Are Resale NFL Playoff Tickets Safe?

Verified resale can be particularly useful during the playoffs because inventory changes quickly once matchups are confirmed.

Use established ticketing platforms that provide ticket verification and clear buyer protection.

For high-demand postseason games, we would be especially cautious about private social-media sellers.

The combination of scarcity, urgency and expensive tickets makes major playoff games attractive targets for scams.

Which NFL Playoff Round Should You Attend?

If we were choosing purely as a ticket buyer:

Best choice for flexibility: Wild Card Weekend
Six games create the largest range of markets and destinations.

Best balance of atmosphere and availability: Divisional Round
Only eight teams remain, but there are still four games to choose from.

Best for maximum stakes: AFC or NFC Championship
One win from the Super Bowl, but less inventory and far less destination flexibility.

Best if budget is secondary: Conference Championship
This is the strongest team-hosted postseason experience before the neutral-site Super Bowl.

For many international supporters, we think the Divisional Round is the underrated option.

You still get an elite playoff atmosphere without limiting yourself to only two possible games.

NFL Playoff Tickets FAQs

How many teams make the NFL playoffs?

Fourteen teams qualify: seven from the AFC and seven from the NFC.

Does every playoff team host a game?

No. Home games are determined by seeding and results. The No.1 seeds receive a Wild Card bye and host their first postseason game in the Divisional Round.

When are the 2026 NFL playoffs?

Wild Card Weekend takes place from 16–18 January 2027, the Divisional Round on 23–24 January and the AFC and NFC Championship Games on 31 January.

Can I buy playoff tickets before the matchup is confirmed?

Potential playoff inventory can become available before every detail is known. Check the exact purchase and refund terms before buying.

What happens if the playoff game I bought is not played?

The answer depends on the ticket and platform terms. For official or authorised inventory, check the specific policy covering an unplayed or cancelled game before purchase.

Are Wild Card tickets cheaper than Championship tickets?

Often, but not automatically. Six Wild Card games create more ticket markets, while only two Conference Championship games exist. Individual team demand can still make certain Wild Card games extremely expensive.

When should UK fans book flights for an NFL playoff game?

If the venue depends on an earlier playoff result, we would favour flexible or refundable arrangements rather than committing heavily to one assumed scenario.

Are playoff tickets available on resale platforms?

Yes. Verified resale inventory can become an important part of the postseason ticket market as existing ticket holders list seats.

Is the Divisional Round worth attending?

We think it is one of the strongest options for travelling fans: high-stakes playoff football, four possible games and generally more destination choice than Conference Championship weekend.

Find NFL Playoff Tickets

The best playoff-ticket strategy is not simply to buy as early as possible or wait as long as possible.

It is to understand what is confirmed, what remains uncertain and how much risk your trip can tolerate.

Compare available postseason games, check the exact ticket conditions and choose the playoff experience that works for your budget and travel plans.
