The AFC Championship Game takes place on Sunday 31 January 2027, with the winner advancing to Super Bowl LXI.

For ticket buyers, this is one of the most unusual markets in the NFL calendar.

There is only one AFC game, but the stadium and matchup will not be confirmed until the Divisional Round is complete.

That means the central buying decision is not simply:

“Should I buy early or wait?”

It is:

“How much uncertainty am I prepared to accept before I know exactly where the game will be played?”

For local supporters, that uncertainty can be manageable.

For somebody travelling across the US or internationally, it can completely change the cost and practicality of attending.

The AFC Championship follows the Divisional Round on 23–24 January.

So supporters may have only around one week between knowing the confirmed matchup and attending the game.

That short window is the defining feature of the ticket market.

Who Hosts the AFC Championship Game?

The AFC Championship is not played at a neutral venue.

The highest-seeded surviving AFC team hosts the game.

That means the host city depends entirely on the postseason bracket.

If the No.1 seed reaches the Conference Championship, it will host.

If the No.1 seed is eliminated, hosting rights move to the highest remaining seed.

This is one reason regular-season seeding matters so much to supporters considering Championship Game tickets.

A team can reach the AFC Championship and still have to travel.

Why this matters when buying tickets

Until the Divisional Round finishes, you may know that your team could reach the AFC Championship without knowing whether the game would take place:

at home

or

hundreds or thousands of miles away.

For a local season-ticket holder, that may simply determine whether they have access to a home game.

For an international traveller, it can determine which airport, hotel and entire trip you need.

There is no single universal AFC Championship ticket release.

Potential host teams can manage postseason inventory differently.

Season-ticket members may receive postseason purchasing options or priority, while other inventory may become available through official team ticketing channels.

Verified resale inventory can also develop as tickets reach holders and plans change.

The important distinction

You may encounter potential or conditional Championship Game inventory before the matchup is confirmed.

That does not mean the game is guaranteed to take place in that stadium.

Before buying, establish:

  • whether the ticket is for a confirmed or potential game;
  • what happens if the team does not host;
  • whether payment is taken immediately;
  • whether any refund is automatic;
  • and which fees, if any, are refundable.

Do not assume every platform or ticket type handles an unplayed game in exactly the same way.

Should You Buy Before the AFC Championship Matchup Is Confirmed?

Sometimes.

But this is one of the clearest examples of where buyer circumstances matter more than a universal rule.

Buying early can make sense if:

  • you support a team strongly positioned to host;
  • you will attend regardless of opponent;
  • you want several seats together;
  • you need a particular seating area;
  • inventory is already limited;
  • and the conditions covering an unplayed game are clear.

Waiting makes more sense if:

  • your team’s seeding is uncertain;
  • you do not know whether they will host;
  • you are travelling a significant distance;
  • the opponent matters to you;
  • or you are uncomfortable tying up money in a potential game.

Our view

If you live near a possible host stadium, conditional buying can be a reasonable calculated decision.

If you need to fly internationally, we would set a much higher bar.

A refundable ticket does not make the flight, hotel or car hire refundable.

The Four AFC Championship Buying Windows

Rather than looking for a mythical cheapest day, we think it is more useful to understand the four stages of this market.

1. Before the playoffs begin

There is maximum uncertainty.

You may know which teams are well positioned in the AFC, but qualification, seeding and progression remain unresolved.

At this stage, certainty is low and any potential Championship inventory needs particularly careful checking.

2. During Wild Card and Divisional Weekend

Possible hosts begin to disappear from the bracket.

As the field narrows, the likely scenarios become easier to understand.

This can be useful if you are following one particular team, but the Championship venue is still not guaranteed until the relevant Divisional result is final.

3. Immediately after the Divisional Round

This is the big reset.

The two AFC finalists are known.

The host city is known.

Supporters of both teams enter a single confirmed market.

Travelling fans begin booking.

Sellers also have much greater certainty about whether they can attend.

Prices and inventory can therefore change quickly in both directions.

4. The final days before kickoff

Last-minute resale can occasionally produce opportunities.

But there is much less room for error than during the regular season.

If you need flights, a hotel or several seats together, waiting until the final hours is a very different gamble from waiting on a normal Sunday game.

AFC Championship Ticket Prices

There is no reliable universal price for an AFC Championship ticket.

Only one AFC game exists, so the market depends heavily on who hosts and who visits.

The biggest factors include:

  • host team demand;
  • visiting fanbase;
  • stadium capacity;
  • seat location;
  • how much primary inventory reaches buyers;
  • resale supply;
  • recent team success;
  • travel demand;
  • and the perceived attractiveness of the matchup.

A Championship Game involving two large and highly engaged fanbases can behave very differently from another possible matchup.

Don’t judge the market on the cheapest listing alone

Suppose the cheapest ticket is $700.

That number is more useful if you also know whether there are:

50 comparable tickets available

or

500.

Inventory depth helps tell you whether the market still has flexibility.

A rising lowest price combined with rapidly disappearing inventory is a different signal from a high headline price sitting above hundreds of unsold seats.

Should You Wait for AFC Championship Ticket Prices to Fall?

Only if you can tolerate being wrong.

Championship Game resale prices can move as kickoff approaches, but there is no rule that guarantees they will fall.

The problem is scarcity.

You are no longer choosing between multiple AFC playoff games.

There is one game.

If demand strengthens or inventory disappears, there is no alternative AFC Championship elsewhere that weekend.

Waiting is more defensible when:

you are flexible on seat location;

you only need one ticket;

inventory remains deep;

you are already near the host city;

and attending is optional rather than essential.

We would buy sooner when:

you need multiple seats together;

you have already committed substantial travel costs;

seat location matters;

inventory is clearly tightening;

or attending the game is the central purpose of the trip.

At this stage of the postseason, certainty has a value of its own.

Travelling to the AFC Championship from Overseas

The AFC Championship is one of the hardest NFL games around which to build an international trip.

The issue is not the game itself.

It is the timetable.

The venue may not be confirmed until the Divisional Round concludes on 24 January.

The AFC Championship is played on 31 January.

That leaves roughly a week.

For an international supporter, that can mean:

  • expensive last-minute airfares;
  • limited direct-flight options;
  • reduced hotel availability;
  • more complicated connections;
  • difficult car-hire decisions;
  • and less margin for weather or travel disruption.

Don’t assume every potential AFC host is equally easy to reach

Some NFL cities have major international airports and extensive direct connections.

Others may require a domestic connection or substantial onward travel.

So two Championship tickets at similar prices can create completely different total trip costs.

Our recommendation

If you are determined to attend the AFC Championship regardless of host city, keep the travel plan as flexible as possible until the bracket gives you certainty.

If you only want to attend when your own team qualifies, avoid building an expensive non-refundable trip around an assumed result.

Travelling Within the US

Domestic travellers have more flexibility, but distance still matters.

A supporter who can drive to the possible host city has a very different buying problem from someone who needs a cross-country flight.

Once the matchup is confirmed, compare:

ticket + travel + accommodation + local transport

rather than the ticket price alone.

A slightly cheaper seat in a difficult last-minute destination can easily become the more expensive overall trip.

Is the AFC Championship Worth Attending?

If your priority is stakes and atmosphere, absolutely.

There is no later home game.

The winner goes to the Super Bowl.

For the host team’s supporters, it can be the final chance to see their team at home all season.

That combination creates an atmosphere few regular-season games can match.

But from a pure ticket-buying perspective, it is not automatically the best-value postseason round.

If value and travel flexibility matter more

We would seriously consider the Divisional Round.

There are four games instead of two, the stakes are still enormous, and international travellers may have slightly more choice over destination and ticket market.

If maximum stakes matter more

The Conference Championship is difficult to beat.

This is the final team-hosted step before the neutral-site Super Bowl.

AFC Championship vs Super Bowl: Which Should You Attend?

These are very different buying propositions.

AFC Championship

  • home stadium atmosphere;
  • one fanbase has genuine home advantage;
  • venue confirmed late;
  • potentially difficult short-notice travel;
  • generally more traditional NFL matchday experience.

Super Bowl

  • neutral predetermined venue;
  • destination known months ahead;
  • considerably broader event programme;
  • typically a much more expensive ticket market;
  • less uncertainty around travel planning.

If the goal is seeing elite postseason football inside a team’s own stadium, we would choose the AFC Championship.

If the goal is the biggest NFL event regardless of price, the Super Bowl is a different category entirely.

See our Super Bowl Tickets guide for the current buying options for Super Bowl LXI.

Buying AFC Championship Tickets on Resale

Verified resale can become particularly important once the matchup is confirmed.

Existing ticket holders may decide they cannot attend, while supporters of the visiting team enter the market looking for seats.

That creates a rapidly changing mix of supply and demand.

When comparing resale inventory:

  • check the full price, not only the headline listing;
  • verify seat location carefully;
  • use established ticketing platforms;
  • understand delivery arrangements;
  • and avoid relying on screenshots as proof of a valid mobile ticket.

AFC Championship Tickets: Supporter’s Verdict

Ticket difficulty: Very high once the matchup is confirmed

Best for: Supporters who want the highest-stakes game possible in a genuine home stadium

Best value: Usually not the cheapest postseason option; the Divisional Round may offer a better balance

Buy early? Yes when host certainty and inventory justify it; conditional buying requires careful checking

International trip difficulty: High

Our verdict

The AFC Championship is not a market where we would obsess over finding the absolute lowest ticket price.

There is only one game.

The host is confirmed late.

The buying window is short.

For most committed supporters, the better objective is:

find a legitimate ticket you are happy with once enough of the uncertainty has disappeared.

Find AFC Championship Tickets

The AFC Championship combines enormous demand with unusually little certainty.

The best strategy is not automatically to buy at the first opportunity or wait until the final day.

Understand:

who could host, what your ticket terms actually guarantee, how much inventory remains and how much travel risk you are prepared to accept.

Once the matchup is confirmed, compare available seats and choose the option that works for the entire trip — not just the ticket.
